Rated PG-13
Story (from website):
A film about two men - one from a white church in the well-to-do suburbs and one from a black church in the inner-city projects. Although founded by the same man, each church manifests its mission in a very different way. This film authentically tells the story of how a rebellious son and a street-smart pastor struggle to bridge the gap between their respective churches and cultures. More importantly, at its core, The Second Chance is about being willing to step outside your comfort zone and serve where you are called.
Technical Info:
There are instances of the word da** plus an extra if you count where it shows it written on a newspaper headline. There are also instances of a** and h*ll. Dress is modest for the most part, a few scences may be objectionable: prostitute shown with very short shorts in one scence and part of midriff showing in another. There is little violence, shows young man beaten up after a fight, but not the beating itself, no real violence. Smoking, drinking and drugs are shown or referenced but not glorified.
Angela's Take:
I am not sure where to start, so I will go with the bad news first. To say that I was extremely disappointed with this movie would be an understatement. While some may debate on all of the language and clothing issues, I was appalled at the use of the word da**. Of course some would use the excuse that the pastor is struggling with the sin of cursing, but there ARE creative ways to say or show that someone is cursing (or commiting any other kind of sin) without actually doing it, and if they couldn't be thought of, it should have been left out. Ephesians 5:3 "But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God' s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.......For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light and find out what pleases the Lord." (NIV). Aside from this, which was my big issue, the story seemed to be missing the mark anyway.
The good - I have to say that I was impressed with the film quality. This movie also had it's good points/lessons to be learned/reviewed as far as getting caught up in fame and fortune, getting your hands "dirty" on the mission field and thinking twice about the way you spend money, however I would not say that this movie could be used as an absolute guide for these things, and in that I end with bad again.
I felt that the movie, possibly unintentionally, was discriminating against large "white" "rich" churches, which is not fair, as well as labeling them "black" and "white," -this is ridiculous and unnecessary, I feel pushing these views only encourage racism. The large churches I have attended have been pretty diverse, and I know of many "rich" and "poor" churches, enough to be able to say this is not an accurate description for all of America. Having fame and fortune, camera crews and expensive things aren't wrong, it is where your heart is, maybe a question of why and/or how instead of what would better answer whether it is wrong or not and answers vary from person to person, same with giving money and not always putting in your own sweat. Anyone living in the Northern VA area who has to commute 3 or more hours to work each day, then try to spend any kind of quality time with your family and participate in your own church can ESPECIALLY understand that one, as well as most everyone else. I know that I would LOVE to have the extra time to do all kinds of things, but it just isn't going to happen. As well as my last note - walking the streets with the lost doesn't give you permission to behave like one.
I do not recommend this movie to watch with anyone who is not a Christian, I can't say that I recommend it to anyone anyway, but especially for someone who can use it as further fuel to repel Christians and Christianity.
Rebekah from Marshall :
"I really love that movie because it is so touching. I wouldn't advise people under 13 to watch it though. there are some bad words in it. my favoirte singer is in it too. Michael W. Smith is in it. I love it some much and I advise people they should watch it."
